Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, a fitting day to re-share this message from one of our Shunda Creek alumni:

Dear Shunda. You were the only one who accepted me while the rest of the world turned their back. You made me feel like I wasn’t alone for the first time in years. You saw the good person buried inside me when the rest of the world saw me as worthless. You were with me when no one else wanted to be around me.

Dear Shunda, you gave me hope when I was sure I was guaranteed a life of misery and suffering. You showed me that I can still be messed up and live a happy, sober, successful life. You showed me true happiness for the first time in my life and I became addicted to it.

Dear Shunda, you made me belong and showed me that it is much better to love than hate. You showed me that I’m an amazing person that deserves to be happy. You gave me unconditional love and acceptance when all I knew was hate.

Dear Shunda, through you I found the person I truly am. Through you I eliminated the monster that had possessed me. Through you I became the amazing person that I love today.

Dear Shunda, I continue to try and bring good into this world, just as you did to me. Thanks to you, the world constantly puts amazing people and things in my path. You taught me how to live life and discover this absolutely beautiful world, rather than running around lost in my insanity.

Dear Shunda, you are the single best and most important thing that ever happened to me. I feel like you are where I was born, I love life, I love the world, I love people and I love myself because of you. Everything I do today I feel like you guide me.

Thanks,
